Every figure on this page is computed from the inputs you enter, by the method stated below it. PunchListWorks publishes no market rates and quotes no survey: the defaults are a worked example to replace with your own.
The best handyman estimating software is the one that estimates the way a handyman prices: hours at a rate, a trip charge, materials at cost marked up, tax where the state charges it, and a deposit if the job is worth booking. Most estimating software is written for contractors bidding a build, with take-offs and subcontractors a handyman never uses; the rest is a blank form. This guide is about what a handyman estimate has to carry, and the free handyman quote on this site builds one with no account.

Hours times your rate, both on the page
The labor line is hours times your hourly rate, and both numbers are on the estimate, because a labor figure with nothing behind it is the line every customer argues with. If you charge a two-hour minimum, enter the minimum as the hours; the estimate should say what the customer is paying for.
The trip charge is the drive, and it belongs on its own line
Every visit costs the drive, the unloading and the walk-through, whether it is a ten-minute fix or a full day. A trip charge on its own line pays for that and stops the small job losing money; folding it into the hourly rate makes the long job look expensive for no reason.
Materials marked up, tax on the materials, the deposit last
Materials go in at your cost and come out marked up as one line; sales tax applies to the materials in most states and not the labor, so the estimate shows the taxed base; and the deposit to book comes last as a share of the total, which is what the customer pays to hold the date.

Best handyman estimating software: common questions
What makes estimating software good for a handyman?
It prices by the hour with a trip charge, marks up materials as one line, taxes the materials and not the labor unless told otherwise, asks for a deposit, and keeps the estimate against the customer so the invoice starts from it. Take-offs, subcontractor lines and bid schedules are for a different trade.
Is there a free handyman estimate template?
The handyman quote on this site is free and needs no account: hours, rate, materials, markup, trip, tax and deposit in, the quote out, printed as it stands. PunchListWorks Pro adds your business name and logo, a PDF without our line, and saving it against the customer so the invoice is one click from the quote.
Should I quote a flat price or by the hour?
Quote the lines either way: a flat price that is not built from hours and materials is a guess, and the customer who asks why it costs what it does deserves an answer. The tool builds the price from its parts; if you prefer to present one figure, the total is on the page and the lines are your defence.
