Handyman software has one job the field service suites forget: a handyman's day is a punch list of small tasks at one hourly rate with a trip charge, not a scheduled install with a crew and a parts order. The software has to price a visit from hours, materials, markup and the trip; turn a list of tasks into hours; raise an invoice with the balance due; and keep it all against the customer for the callback. This guide is about what that software has to do, and the free handyman quote on this site does the arithmetic with no account.

Price by the hour with a trip charge, and show both

A handyman's price is the hourly rate for the hours plus the trip that pays for the drive and the setup, and the customer should see both lines, because a per-job number hides why the small job costs what it does. Software that asks for a flat price has skipped the arithmetic the handyman does anyway on the tailgate; the tools on this site show the rate, the hours and the trip as lines.

Materials at your price, tax on the materials

Materials go in at your cost and are marked up to cover the store run, the return and the part kept on the truck, shown as one line rather than a cost and a fee. Sales tax in most states falls on the materials and not the labor, so the software should tax the marked-up materials line and show the base, and leave the labor alone unless your state says otherwise.

The punch list into hours, and the job into the record

A work order is a list of tasks, and the honest estimate is tasks times your average minutes per task at your rate, with per-task shown so you can see whether the list is worth the drive. Then every quote, work order and invoice files against the customer and the job, because the next call is about the last visit.

Handyman software: common questions

What should handyman software include?

A quote built from hours, hourly rate, materials at cost with a markup, a trip charge, sales tax on materials and a deposit; a work order that turns a punch list into hours and a price; an invoice with the balance due after any deposit; and customers and jobs so every document files against the visit it came from. Dispatch boards and GPS are for fleets; a handyman with one truck does not need to pay for them.

Is there free handyman software?

The tools on this site are free and need no account: the quote, the work order and the invoice each price the visit on the page from your own rate and print as they stand. PunchListWorks Pro adds your business name and logo, a PDF with no watermark, and saving every job against the customer.

What is the best software for a handyman business?

The right test is whether it prices a visit the way you do, by the hour with a trip charge and materials marked up, and whether it keeps the quote, the work order and the invoice against the customer without a per-user fee for your helper. The tools on this site do the first; the paid plan does the second.
